More than 800,000 outboard engines are sold worldwide each year. Two-stroke outboards can emit as much as 25% of the fossil fuel into the atmosphere and water. Most gas-powered outboard engines do not have pollution controls such as catalytic converters, are horribly inefficient, and emit carcinogens such as benzene, toluene, and xylene, not to mention nitrogen oxides. One gallon of gasoline weighing 6 pounds and burned in a marine engine produces 19 pounds of CO2. Electric propulsion is the obvious solution to this major problem facing the marine sector.

But electrification of boats doesn’t only make sense from an emissions & climate change point of view. It actually provides a much better boating experience. The top two reasons that people enjoy boating are to connect with nature and to connect with friends and family. No noise, no fumes, no maintenance and better performance at every RPM: Electrification improves significantly on traditional propulsion systems. As more and more people gravitate towards electric cars, the obvious next choice is boating.

With time, it’s inevitable that all boats will convert to electric. Salmo intends to be at the forefront of this transition.
